Attention Plant Hunters!!!

We had an amazing trip to the Botanical Gardens on Wednesday. As I said on the way back we would have work to do via the Blog for homework/classwork.
Let's start with a comparison.
Compare the native trees to the area: Oak, Maple, Apple, to the Royal Palms, Cacao trees, and Kapok tree of the rainforest. What is the difference in the size of the leaves? Why does that help each plant survive in the regions that they live in?

Next: Why do the plants that are native to the Desert area have small if any leaves? What about them allows them to survive in such a waterless environment?

Finally: Do all plants need to be rooted in soil? Are there plants that grow without being planted? How do they do it?

I look forward to your conversations and your posts to the blog. We will talk about them on Tuesday. Please also feel free to bring your written responses to class if you do not want to post them.

I am excited to read your ideas... feel free to discuss your answers with your parents before you post.

No. Not all plants need to be buried in order to grow. As long as the get the sunlight and water that they need for food they should be able to grow!

Plants living in a desert can make thier own water or get it from surounding things. Such as cactuses. They can store water for a very long time. They collect water from the little rain and save it up.

I'm not sure about a lot of you questions and I'm excited to find out the right answers but for now I'm going to guess. I think that the plants in the desert have little if any leaves is because in the desert their is very little rain and leaves need more water then spines. The plants in the desert can survive because most of them can store water inside of them selves and drink it when they need to also they need less water. Not all plants need to be in soil and it proves that with our tomato plants we are growing all some plants need is sunlight, rain, air .

Great job Natalie and Samantha, both of you are on the right track. Cacti hold onto their water supply for a very long time and make their food in their "skin". The plants that were in the conservatory had very long and large leaves, and if you remember there was always a mist and plenty of sun. Why do you think this may be the case?

Not all plants need to planted to grow. Sunlight and water are all some plants need to grow and if they get enough of that their leaves will grow big like the ones in the consevetory. That is why there was mist in some of the rooms because those plants need it in order to live.

Well first the reason the leaves are so small on the trees is because they have alot of sunlight but not much water. Which leads me to why they can live in that enviroment because they can live on just sunlight but could use just a little water

something i forgot to add before was that the plants suck up water from cacti in the desert. Next question: Like said in my first commemnt plants don't have to get planted in order to grow. This is possible because they suck up enough water from other plants such as cacti and save it up from what is little rain they get each year.

I think the reason the leaves in the rain forest area were large and there was lots of sun and mist is because the more sun, air, and water the plants get the bigger they get. Just like humans the more energy (food) we get the bigger we get.

no, i don't think so because as long as they get the right amount of water the should be able to grow without being buried!!!

plants that live in the desert like cacti hold water in there like selves. They get all that water from the rai they have. I think they store it because of the very little rain they have there!!!

the royal plants have longer leaves

the differencce in the size of the leaves were big. in the desert there were about no leaves and in the rain forest they were huge. the oaks, maples and apples were all pretty normal. the rain forest tree's leaves are big mostly because there is not much sun underneath all the other trees so the bigger the leaf, the faster and easier photosynthesis is. the leaves on the oak trees were normal due to the normal heat and the cactus just stores water inside itself.

the desert plants adapt to their enviorment by storing the water that rarely comes, inside itself. since cacti are hollow it is able to do this. then it uses up the water little by little and gets all the sun it needs.

not all plants need to be rooted in soil because they get all their water from the air due to the mist and gets its sunlight regularly. the plants that have not been planted start growing when another plants root's spread.

The oak, maple, and apple trees live in this area an can survive naturally without any need from humans. But the royal palms, the cacao trees, and the kapok tree of the rainforest don't survive in this region and they have to be kept at a higher tempature with more water. That is why those plants were kept at a greenouse in Botanical Gardens.

I don't really know the difference of the size of leaves but I think that the royal palms have the biggest. Since the plants that live in a hotter region don't have that much shade they use their big leaves instead.

I don't think the plants in the desert have any leaves. The cactus has a pricker outside but a moist inside that is good for woodpeckers and other birds, animals, and insects.

Not all plants need to be planted in soil and have roots to grow. If they have sunlight and water they should be fine on their own.

1st question: The trees in our are have smaller leaves than the trees in the rain forest. I think that because the rain forest has many other leaves blocking each other so they need large leaves to absorb as much sunlight as they need.

2nd Question: They have small if any leaves because they lose water as quickly. They can store the water for a long time because they have long roots so they can get water deep in the ground.

3rd Question: No, all they need is some sunlight and water.

I think that leaves in the desert are small because of the heat and because the desert gets very little rain. They might even be small because there are mostly cactuses there and they have needles so plants with needles might not have to have as much water as the leaves do. The Cactuses can also store water much longer than coniferous leaves.

The difference in the leaves is that the palms, cacao and kapok have HUGE leaves, while the oak, maple and apple leaves are about the size of a grown man's palm. The huge leaves have more area so they are exposed to more air, which they need for photosynthesis. In the rainforest, where there are many more plants, it's much more competitive.

In the desert, the leaves are small or don't even exist because the cacti they belong to are up to 50' tall, and there are hardly any other plants around, so they're not competing for air.

In the rainforest, there are also some plants that don't even need dirt. They live on rocks in the case of moss, and they live on trees in the case of things that look like vines.
